Porcelain is a type of ceramic that is created through the firing of kaolin-containing clay; its firing temperature is in the range of 1,200 °C to 1,400 °C. Porcelain is exceptionally strong, durable, and has a subtle translucence. It has been a valuable material for practical uses and decorative design for hundreds of years.
Making porcelain follows a sequence of controlled steps that integrate strength, precision, and fine craftsmanship. It may be summarized as follows:
Raw Material Preparation: The kaolin, feldspar, and quartz are purified, blended, combine with water, and include any other necessary elements that should also be mixed.
Forming: The prepared mixture is formed using pressing, extrusion, or casting, for example.
Drying: The formed pieces are dryed slowly to eliminate free moisture to help the pieces not crack during firing.
Firing: The formed pieces are subject to a firing in a kiln at 1,200–1,400 °C. This firing initiates the process of vitrification, which gives Porcelain hardness and density, while also providing translucency due to the character of the remaining glass.
Glazing: After the first firing, it is often that a glaze applied on the piece and re-fired, which results in a surface that is smooth, glossy, and durable.
Porcelain is easy to care for, and with a little extra attention, its beauty and durability will last for years. Here's how to do it:
Cleaning: Wipe surfaces often with a soft cloth and gentle dish soap diluted in water. Avoid abrasive pads and chemical cleaners that can be harsh.
Stain Removal: For more stubborn stains, create a gentle paste of baking soda and water to remove stains. Do not use strong chemicals that may harm the porcelain finish.
Preventing Heat: Prevent thermal shock by placing hot cookware on trivets or heat mats immediately after removing it from the stove:
Preventing Scratches: Avoid scratches on the surfaces of porcelain by using a cutting board.
Awareness of Impact:Though fairly durable, porcelain can chip and crack if struck by a heavy or hard object, and so it is best practice to avoid impact.
